Nighttime, the Power of Love: Why Couples Should Have Sexual Relations at Night – Scientific and Religious Reasons

Pressadda

Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Couples often prefer to have sexual intercourse at night due to biological, psychological, behavioral, and religious reasons. Looking at the Nepali society and the global context, the main reasons become clear. First and foremost, nighttime offers more privacy and seclusion for couples. During the day, family members, children, or guests may be around, making it difficult to find uninterrupted time. At night, after all daily tasks are completed, both the body and mind are free from external stress, allowing couples to spend quality time together comfortably.

During sexual activity, hormones such as oxytocin and dopamine are released, which help reduce stress. After sexual contact, the hormone prolactin is released, promoting deep and restorative sleep. Therefore, nighttime is considered suitable for intimacy as it helps relieve the fatigue accumulated throughout the day.

Biologically, although men have higher testosterone levels in the morning, many women feel more relaxed and romantic at night. The time when couples’ natural rhythms align is often during the night. Dim or soft lighting reduces self-consciousness about the body, boosting confidence and making closeness with a partner easier.

From a religious perspective, Hindu scriptures, philosophy, and Kamasutra (by Vatsyayana) recognize the four aims of human life—dharma, artha, kama, and moksha—and place significant importance on ‘kama’ (sexual desire and pleasure). Hinduism views sexuality not only as a source of physical pleasure but also as a means for procreation and marital happiness. Scriptures also provide guidance on appropriate timing for sexual activity:

  • Nishith Kala (Midnight, 11 PM–1 AM): Considered an appropriate time for sexual activity.
  • Sandhya Kala (Evening): Sexual activity during the time between sunset and darkness is discouraged, as this period is traditionally meant for worship and meditation, making it considered inauspicious.
  • Brahma Muhurta (4–6 AM): Reserved for spiritual practices, so sexual intercourse during this time is also advised against.

Furthermore, the tendency to engage in sexual activity at night is linked to mood, environment, and daily routines. Daily fatigue, privacy, a peaceful environment, hormone activity, and lifestyle all contribute to couples being drawn to nighttime intimacy. However, there is no single “perfect time” for sexual activity. Morning, afternoon, or night—any time when both partners feel comfortable, safe, and happy—is ideal.

Overall, nighttime sexual activity is natural, convenient, aligned with lifestyle, and even balanced from a religious perspective. It helps promote mental peace, emotional bonding, and closeness between partners.
