The history of Sealand is connected to World War II. During the war, the British army built a sea platform called “Roughs Tower” in the North Sea to prevent German attacks. After the war ended, this platform was abandoned. In 1967, a former British soldier and radio operator, Paddy Roy Bates, took control of the platform. Taking advantage of its location outside the UK’s territorial waters, he declared it an independent territory and proclaimed himself as Prince. This is how Sealand was formed.
The total area of Sealand is only about 550 square meters (0.004 square kilometers), which is smaller than a football field, and its permanent population is extremely small, mostly limited to the Bates family. It follows a monarchical system, where members of the Bates family use titles like Prince and Princess, and currently Michael Bates leads it. Although no country or the United Nations has officially recognized Sealand, it has its own constitution, national flag, currency (Sealand Dollar), stamps, and passports.
Throughout its history, Sealand has faced various challenges, such as an armed attack in 1978, which was successfully controlled by the Bates family. In the modern era, Sealand has also made its presence known in internet and digital services, especially as a symbol of data hosting and online freedom. Despite being the smallest micronation in terms of both area and population and lacking full legal recognition, Sealand continues to claim independence and has generated global interest and debate.
