The Belief That Chilies Should Not Be Handed Directly: Superstition or Science?

Pressadda

Prakash Kafle / Kathmandu: In Nepali society, there is a common belief that “chilies should not be handed directly from hand to hand.” Many of us may have experienced avoiding giving chilies directly into someone’s hand. This can generally be understood from two perspectives—cultural belief and practical or scientific reasons.

1. Practical and Scientific Aspect

There are some real reasons behind not handing chilies directly:

  • Burning and irritation: Chilies contain a compound called capsaicin, which can cause a burning sensation on the skin and sensitive organs. If someone touches their eyes or nose after handling chilies, it can lead to significant discomfort.
  • Hygiene and infection: Passing items directly from hand to hand increases the risk of transferring germs, especially with raw food items, which can lead to hygiene concerns.

2. Cultural and Social Aspect

Traditionally, chilies are associated with “spiciness” or “sharpness” in nature:

  • Belief of bitterness in relationships: The spiciness of chilies is symbolically linked to relationships, leading to the belief that handing them directly may cause conflict or misunderstanding.
  • Concept of negative energy: Some people associate it with negative energy or influence, although there is no scientific basis for this belief.

Conclusion

The idea that giving chilies directly into someone’s hand can harm relationships is merely a superstition. However, since chilies can cause irritation to the skin or eyes, it is more practical and safe to place them in a bowl or plate instead of handing them directly.
