Nearly 200,000 Government Employees to Lose Jobs from Tomorrow

Kathmandu — The government’s decision to remove contract and daily-wage employees has triggered protests. Affected workers staged a sit-in at the Ministry of Finance.

The move is expected to impact around 57,000 employees across federal, provincial, and local levels. Including those in education and health sectors, about 200,000 people could lose their jobs, according to union president Kashiraj Shrestha.

Starting from the new fiscal year (July 16), the government plans to replace contract and daily-wage staff with “outsourced” workers. Those affected include office assistants, guards, technicians, computer operators, nurses, ANMs, and AHEBs.

Shrestha accused the government of removing staff to benefit from commission-based outsourcing contracts. He warned that employees who have served for up to 25 years would resist being dismissed. He also noted that despite a Supreme Court order to provide social security and inflation allowances, the decision has not been implemented.

On Tuesday, contract and daily-wage employees marched from the Prime Minister’s Office through the Ministry of General Administration to the Ministry of Finance in protest. Sources say a meeting was held at the PM’s Office to discuss the issue.
