The incident occurred on Friday morning near Chinna Tekuru village in Kurnool district. Around 42 passengers were on board at the time. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as some injured are in critical condition.
According to BBC Telugu, preliminary reports suggest the bus collided with a motorcycle, hitting the fuel tank and causing the fire. Local authorities have not officially confirmed the cause.
Kurnool Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow on Twitter and assured full support to the injured and affected families.
DIG Koya Praveen of Kurnool Range told PTI that around 19 passengers, including two children and two drivers, survived the fire. Police stated that a short circuit caused the bus doors to jam, resulting in the vehicle being engulfed in flames within minutes.
Most of the survivors are reported to be between 25 and 35 years old.
