Seoul – A South Korean court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 25 years in prison for murdering his pregnant wife after she refused to have sex with him.

The Seoul Southern District Court’s Criminal Division, chaired by Judge Jang Chan, delivered the verdict on Thursday against the 35-year-old defendant, identified by the surname Seo. Prosecutors had requested probation along with sentencing, but the court rejected the plea.

“The defendant brutally murdered his spouse, with whom he had vowed to spend his life. The home, which should have been the safest place, turned into a site of unimaginable fear and pain for the victim,” the court said. It further noted that Seo’s attempts to minimize and conceal his crime had deepened the suffering of the victim’s family.

The murder occurred on March 13 at their home in Seoul’s Gangseo district, where Seo strangled his wife as she lay in bed. Shockingly, before his arrest, he even acted as the chief mourner at her funeral.

Investigations revealed that the victim was in the early stages of pregnancy and receiving hospital treatment after a miscarriage. Despite this, Seo repeatedly pressured her into sexual relations.

In January, the victim had expressed her desire for divorce, confiding to friends that she regretted marrying him due to his excessive demands, which reportedly further fueled his anger.
