Kathmandu- Dr. Sangeeta Kaushal Mishra, who had resigned from her position as Additional Secretary in hopes of becoming Nepal’s new Health Minister, has seen her ambition collapse at the very last moment. Prime Minister Sushila Karki had formally recommended her for the post, but her name was withdrawn before the oath-taking ceremony due to ongoing controversies and unresolved investigations.

According to government sources, Dr. Mishra has been under scrutiny for alleged irregularities in the procurement of medical equipment during her tenure as Director General of the Department of Health Services. One of the most controversial cases involves the procurement of mammogram machines, where empty boxes were reportedly handed over while payments were still made. These files remain under active investigation by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

In addition, her six-month absence from office after being denied promotion to secretary had already raised questions about her commitment to public service. Critics within the Health Ministry have pointed out that she was on leave for half a year, only to return days before she was recommended as a minister, which fueled debates over her integrity and credibility.

While five other ministers, including Mahabir Pun and Anil Kumar Sinha, took their oath of office on Monday, Dr. Mishra’s ministerial dream abruptly ended. Known as an ambitious yet controversial figure in Nepal’s health administration, her sudden exclusion has reignited discussions about the accountability of high-level appointments and the challenges of reforming Nepal’s health governance.

Her case highlights how unresolved allegations and administrative controversies can derail even the highest political opportunities. For now, Dr. Mishra’s journey to the cabinet remains uncertain, leaving observers to wonder whether her ambition will resurface in the future or be overshadowed permanently by scandal.
