The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has urged citizens not to use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access banned social media platforms. In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry described VPNs as unsafe, unauthorized, and risky, warning people against their use.

The warning comes after the government banned 26 unregistered platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and X, with many users attempting to bypass restrictions through VPNs.

The ministry clarified that the move is not intended to restrict or control social media but to make it regulated, disciplined, and accountable through self-regulation. It also emphasized that the decision was made in compliance with a Supreme Court order and does not limit citizens’ freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, ‘Hamro Patro’ and ‘Global Diary’ have resumed operations after completing the registration process, while Twitter (X) and WeChat are in the process of registration. The ministry further stated that no fee is required for registration and platforms will be reactivated immediately upon completion, urging other social media companies to comply as well.
