Kathmandu- Protests in Jakarta and major Indonesian cities have entered their second week, sparked by rising living costs, police violence, and criticism of lavish perks for lawmakers. The movement gained momentum after motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan was killed by a police vehicle.
On Wednesday, hundreds of women dressed in pink and carrying broomsticks rallied outside parliament. Organized by the Indonesian Women’s Alliance, they said the broomsticks symbolized sweeping away corruption, militarism, and police repression.
President Prabowo Subianto, who attended China’s military parade in Beijing alongside Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, pledged to cut perks for MPs before his trip. Protesters, however, argue reforms must go deeper, addressing inequality, accountability, and governance.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have condemned police violence. At least 10 people have died and over 1,000 have been injured since the unrest began.
