Kathmandu – In Fairfax County, Virginia, a Nepali man was shot dead by police while attacking his family members. On Monday, inside an apartment near Mantua, the man brutally attacked three of his family members with a knife before police intervened and shot him.
According to the Nepali news portal Khasokhas.com, the suspect was identified as Chhatra Bahadur Thapa. The victims were reported to be his 35-year-old son-in-law Santosh Kumar Thapa, his 51-year-old wife Binda Thapa, and his 31-year-old daughter Mamata Thapa. Police said the approximately 50-year-old suspect attacked his wife and daughter around 5 a.m. at their apartment on the 3900 block of Persimmon Drive. Both women later died in the hospital. When police arrived, the suspect was attacking his son-in-law. Despite repeated orders to drop the weapon, he refused, and an officer fired.

Police Chief Kevin Davis stated, “When our officer fired, the son-in-law’s life was in immediate danger.” Officers attempted CPR on the suspect, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A one-year-old child was also inside the apartment but was unharmed. Davis explained that the son-in-law had been outside clearing snow from his car when he heard commotion inside, called 911, and returned to find the attack underway. Another neighbor also called 911 after hearing the disturbance. The son-in-law witnessed his father-in-law attacking his mother-in-law with what appeared to be a 10-inch curved meat-cutting knife, before being attacked himself.
The child has been placed under child protective services. Police noted there were no prior records of domestic violence or calls to that residence, but investigations are ongoing. “We still don’t know what kind of turmoil or conflict was happening in their lives, but it’s unimaginable that someone would kill their own family in this way,” Davis said. Reviewing body-worn camera footage, officials confirmed the officer followed protocol to prevent further harm.
