Japan: Akira Ogawa, the mayor of Maebashi in eastern Japan, has resigned after admitting to over 10 hotel meetings with a married male official. She apologized publicly following the scandal.

City council members had long demanded her resignation, and a no-confidence vote was scheduled for Thursday. However, Ogawa submitted her resignation to the council president on Tuesday, effective Thursday.
The 42-year-old, a former lawyer, became Maebashi’s first female mayor last year with a landslide victory. She stated on social media that stepping down was the best way to take responsibility for her actions and hinted at running again in the next election.
