Kathmandu – Durga Prasai, the coordinator of the Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizens’ Protection Campaign, has been arrested by police. Prasai, who had already announced that he would begin a protest movement from Mangsir 7 (November 22), was taken into custody at midnight from his residence in Bhaktapur. A joint team from the Kathmandu District Police Office and the Crime Investigation Bureau arrested him and stated that he is currently being held at the Bhadrakali Police Office.

It has been reported that Prasai was arrested because some of his recent remarks were considered inflammatory and could potentially incite violence. He had been claiming that starting from Mangsir 7, he would launch a nationwide protest, obstructing transportation and all other sectors. Through his campaign named “Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizens’ Protection,” he had announced a “Grand Citizens’ Liberation Movement” and planned to demonstrate power in Kathmandu on that date.

Supporters of Prasai have been urging people via Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and other platforms to come to Kathmandu on Mangsir 7 and participate in the protest. Prasai, opposing republicanism, federalism, and secularism, had declared that he would bring more than 150,000 people to Kathmandu. He has also been protesting against banks and financial institutions, accusing them of collecting heavy taxes from poor citizens, and has added debt cancellation as another agenda of his movement.
