Kathmandu – Many people still believe rabies spreads only through a dog bite. However, health experts warn that this misconception can be life-threatening.

How Rabies Spreads:
Rabies usually spreads through animal bites, but contact with the saliva of an infected animal—through cuts, scratches, eyes, nose, or mouth—can also transmit the virus.

Not Just Dogs—Other Animals Too:
Rabies can also spread from cats, monkeys, bats, and foxes, not just dogs. Any infected animal can transmit the virus.

Pets Aren’t Automatically Safe:
Even domestic pets are at risk if not vaccinated. Regular rabies vaccination under veterinary guidance is crucial for household animals like dogs and cats.

Even a Vaccinated Dog’s Bite Can Be Risky:
If a vaccinated dog or cat bites or scratches, seek medical advice immediately. Immunity might not always be complete, and risks remain.

Immediate Vaccination Is Critical:
Rabies vaccines must be administered immediately after exposure. Delay reduces effectiveness, and once symptoms appear, rabies is nearly always fatal.

Tetanus Shots Don’t Protect Against Rabies:
Many wrongly assume tetanus shots provide protection. Doctors warn that tetanus and rabies are completely different, and relying on tetanus alone can be fatal.
