Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. A new study has revealed that frequent viewing of short videos, such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, may negatively impact attention span and impulse control.
According to the research, rapid, short-form videos train the brain to switch focus quickly, making it difficult for individuals to concentrate on longer tasks. The study also found that such content triggers excessive dopamine release, increasing the urge for instant gratification and making viewers more prone to compulsive habits. Experts warn that regular exposure to these videos can lead to addictive behavior, as the brain becomes conditioned to seek constant stimulation. To mitigate these effects, specialists recommend limiting daily screen time for short videos to 30–45 minutes, engaging in activities that enhance focus such as reading or meditation, and incorporating digital detox periods into daily routines.
This study adds to growing concerns about the cognitive impact of short-form digital content, highlighting the need for awareness and moderation among users.
