Kathmandu- A powerful blast in a Hyundai i20 car near Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Fort Metro Station, close to the iconic Red Fort, claimed 11 lives and injured 24 others at around 6:30 PM. The explosion was so intense that it extinguished nearby streetlights and set three to four adjacent vehicles ablaze, plunging the crowded Chandni Chowk area into chaos. The injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Jayaprakash (LNJP) Hospital, where doctors reported many were in critical condition.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah rushed to the hospital post-incident to assess the victims’ conditions and held discussions with the police chief. He confirmed the blast originated from the rear of the i20 car. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally called Shah for updates and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha stated the car had halted at a traffic signal when the explosion occurred.
In the immediate aftermath, police sealed off the entire vicinity. Forensic teams, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and National Security Guard (NSG) units arrived at the scene. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scrutinized, and sniffer dogs are deployed for evidence collection. Authorities suspect it could be a terrorist act and are leaving no stone unturned in the probe.
The incident has sparked nationwide alarm. High alerts are in effect not only in Delhi but also in Mumbai, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, with enhanced patrols and security at sensitive sites. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal labeled it a “major security failure” and demanded swift investigations. Is this linked to the 2,900 kg of explosives uncovered in Faridabad earlier? As probes intensify, the nation awaits answers.
