Kathmandu—Nepal started their U-17 SAFF Championship campaign with a convincing 2–0 win over a 10-man Sri Lanka on Monday at the Race Course Ground in Colombo.
Sameer Kumar was the hero for Nepal, scoring in the 52nd minute and adding another in injury time. Earlier in the first half, he had missed two clear chances but redeemed himself with a brilliant header from a long cross by Pratish Thapa Magar.
Sri Lanka was reduced to 10 men in the 27th minute after Mohamed Imaf was shown a second yellow card.
With this victory, Nepal secured three points in Group A, strengthening their chances of reaching the semifinals. Sri Lanka remains without a point. Nepal will face Bangladesh in their next group match on Thursday.
