Kathmandu—Police have extended the custody of singer and composer Babul Giri by five more days for further investigation into the self-immolation case of singer Nitu Paudel.

The Kathmandu District Court granted the police the extension on Tuesday. Giri was taken into custody after Paudel’s family filed a complaint accusing him of abetting her suicide.
Giri and Paudel were reportedly in a relationship for around seven years. On Kartik 1, Paudel set herself on fire inside Giri’s office in Anamnagar, Kathmandu. She died during treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital on Kartik 7.
After the incident, Giri voluntarily appeared before the police. In his preliminary statement, he admitted to having a romantic relationship with Paudel but denied any involvement in her suicide, citing his father’s death as the reason their marriage couldn’t take place.
Paudel’s family, however, accused Giri of deceiving her by making false marriage promises and emotionally exploiting her for years.
The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
