Historic Achievement in Quantum Science: Helium Atoms Observed in an Entangled State

Prakash Kafle / Kathmandu. Scientists at the Australian National University (ANU) have achieved a major breakthrough in quantum physics by directly confirming one of the most complex and mysterious laws of the universe. For the first time, researchers have observed helium atoms in a state where they exist in different locations at the same time (entangled in motion). This achievement is considered historic for science.According to lead researchers Yogesh Sridhar and Dr. Sin Hojman, the study published in Nature Communications has practically verified a prediction made by quantum theory nearly 100 years ago.

Previously, such experiments had only been successful with particles of light, called photons. However, since atoms like helium have mass and are affected by gravity, this experiment is considered more complex and significant.

According to Dr. Hojman, “The idea that a single particle can exist in two places at the same time and interfere with itself was limited to theory, but being able to observe it directly is an extremely exciting experience.”

This discovery is expected to help clarify the relationship between quantum mechanics at the microscopic level and gravity at the macroscopic level. It is also seen as an important step toward the long-sought “Theory of Everything.”
