Mount Kailash is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon. Revered by Hindus as the abode of Lord Shiva, its summit has never been officially reached by a person.

Climbing is prohibited due to its religious significance. The region is also connected to major Asian rivers and the sacred lakes Manasarovar and Rakshastal.
