San Francisco-OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that the company will soon roll out a major update to ChatGPT, introducing new features designed for adult users, including the ability to access erotic content for verified adults.
Altman shared in a post that ChatGPT had been made “too restrictive” in the past to prevent mental health issues. Now, with improved safety tools, OpenAI plans to relax restrictions for most adult users while keeping strong safeguards for minors and mental health.

According to Altman, a new version of ChatGPT will be released in the coming weeks, allowing users to personalize the AI’s personality — from friendly and emoji-filled conversations to human-like tone — based on preference.
Starting December 2025, OpenAI will also expand its age-verification system under the principle of “treat adult users like adults.” Verified users will gain more freedom, including access to erotica and mature-themed content, though Altman emphasized this as just one example of more flexible adult interaction.
Altman clarified that ChatGPT will continue to block harmful or violent content, and protections for minors will remain in place. “We are not the elected moral police of the world,” he said, comparing the change to how society allows R-rated movies for adults.
This marks a significant cultural shift for OpenAI, which has long imposed strict limits on suggestive or sexual content in ChatGPT.
