The 48-year-old recently resumed smoking after quitting 13 years ago and noted that her habit has even helped her relations with foreign leaders.

U.S. President Donald Trump also praised Meloni at the summit, calling her “beautiful.” Meloni maintains close ties with the Trump administration and has played a mediating role between the EU and U.S. on issues such as the Ukraine war and trade.

At the summit, Meloni told journalists that following the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Italy is close to recognizing the Palestinian state. Rome plans to deploy Italian paramilitary forces under a UN resolution to help stabilize Gaza.
