Process to Freeze Passports of Top Leaders Moves Forward After Gen-Z Protests

Kathmandu – Following the Gen-Z protests, the government led by Prime Minister Sushila Carki has initiated procedures to freeze passports of several top leaders from Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and CPN-Maoist Centre.

According to cabinet sources, the initial list includes former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife Arju Rana Deuba also under preliminary consideration.

Sources say the process has reached an advanced stage, with the Department of Immigration, Passport Office, and legal advisors preparing the necessary documentation and preliminary findings to justify any passport suspension.

Meanwhile, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority and the Asset Management Department have begun investigations into the properties of some leaders. Photos and records have emerged showing cash and valuables recovered from houses of leaders whose residences were damaged during the Gen-Z protests, including those of Oli, Prachanda, and Khadka.

Under the Passport Act 2076, passports can be suspended if there is an ongoing investigation or legal proceedings against an individual. While the procedure has advanced, no passports have been officially frozen yet.

A government source said, “Consultations regarding passport suspension have been completed, and the process is ongoing. Freezing will be implemented once the required legal basis is confirmed.”
