Top 10 States in India with Highest Child Marriage Rates: West Bengal Tops the List

New Delhi: Child marriage continues to be a serious social issue in India, with certain states reporting alarmingly high percentages despite ongoing awareness campaigns and legal restrictions. According to recent data, West Bengal tops the list of Indian states with the highest prevalence of child marriage at 41.6%, followed closely by Bihar (40.8%) and Tripura (40.1%).

The statistics highlight how deep-rooted socio-economic challenges, poverty, and lack of education continue to fuel the practice of marrying off children before the legal age.

Why It Matters
Child marriage is not only a violation of children’s rights but also poses long-term consequences on health, education, and economic empowerment. Girls forced into early marriages often face higher risks of maternal mortality, domestic violence, and dropping out of school, perpetuating cycles of poverty.

The Way Forward
Activists and organizations have been urging for stricter law enforcement, improved education access, and community-level awareness programs to eliminate the practice. With West Bengal, Bihar, and Tripura showing over 40% prevalence, immediate policy interventions are necessary to protect children’s futures.
