Kathmandu- Artists have voiced strong opposition to the Nepal government’s decision to block 26 unregistered social media platforms. Actor Dayahang Rai called the move unpopular and said social media has become essential in daily life.
He stated, ‘Blocking platforms for various reasons is not appropriate. People rely on social media for news, from morning updates to global events. This decision disrupts daily life.’
Actor Khagendra Lamichhane said the move curtails freedom of expression. ‘The government could have explored other options for registration, but blocking is the wrong approach,’ he added.
Actress Rekha Thapa highlighted the impact on youth employment, saying, ‘Many young people create jobs through social media. Threatening to block it is taking away their livelihood. Registration processes can be improved, but this approach is unfair.’
