The 17-year-old, Ben Asten, was training at the Ferntree Gully cricket nets on Tuesday when a ball from an automatic bowling machine hit him on the head and neck.

He was wearing a helmet at the time, but the impact caused serious injuries. According to BBC, he was placed on life support but died on Wednesday.

The Ferntree Gully Cricket Club said it was “completely devastated” by the loss of one of its talented and beloved players.
Club president Arnie Walters described Ben as “both talented and popular within the local cricket community.”

The tragedy comes a decade after the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes, who died in 2014 after being struck on the neck during a Sheffield Shield match — a moment that led to improved safety gear in cricket.
