Kathmandu – A recent surge in online scams has experts issuing a dire warning: your seemingly innocent Google searches could be putting your entire financial life in jeopardy. Hackers and fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, creating fake customer service numbers and phishing websites that appear legitimate in search results.
The common practice of searching for a bank’s customer service number or an e-commerce site can now be a high-risk activity. “Scammers are buying ad space on Google to place fraudulent links at the top of search results,” explains a cybersecurity expert. “All it takes is one wrong click, and you could be directed to a fake site designed to steal your personal and credit card information.”

In a chilling example, one user was tricked into downloading malware after searching for a popular app and clicking an unofficial download link. The software then allowed hackers to access their device and drain their bank account.
To protect yourself, security analysts advise against trusting search results for sensitive information. Instead, always type the official website address directly into your browser or use the official app store for downloads. The news serves as a stark reminder that in the digital age, a moment of convenience can have devastating consequences.
