Kathmandu- Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on Friday following the government’s action after the recent violence in Leh two days ago. The specific charges against him have not yet been clarified. According to PTI, Wangchuk has been taken out of Ladakh.
Following the September 24 violence, a curfew has been imposed in Leh for the third consecutive day. Schools and colleges will remain closed until Saturday. The protests had demanded full statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule. The violence claimed four lives and injured 80 people, including 40 police officers. So far, 60 suspects have been arrested.

After the violence, the Ministry of Home Affairs revoked the foreign fund license of Wangchuk’s organization, Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). Additionally, the CBI has initiated an investigation against Wangchuk’s other NGO, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), for alleged violations under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
Local police initially accused him of sedition. An old complaint alleging non-payment of wages to workers has been reopened. Issues regarding unpaid government land rent and other financial discrepancies are also under investigation.
Internet services have been suspended in Leh, and the CBI is examining financial records from 2020 to 2024, also requesting documents from schools and other institutions.
