Manchester — Senior Pakistani anesthetist Professor Suhail Anjum admitted before a UK medical tribunal that she engaged in sexual activity with a nurse during a gallbladder surgery at Tameside General Hospital on September 16, 2023.

Anjum, responsible for five surgeries that day, left the operating room mid-procedure to engage in what she called a “problematic situation” with a nurse. The incident was immediately reported by a scrub nurse present at the scene.

During questioning, Anjum acknowledged conducting the act while the patient was under anesthesia, citing personal and family stress as contributing factors. She stated that her wife had suffered trauma following the premature birth of their youngest child, which affected her mental state.

“I am deeply embarrassed by this incident and fully understand the seriousness of my actions,” Anjum told the tribunal.

Following the incident, Anjum left the NHS trust in 2024 and returned to Pakistan. The case has raised concerns about patient safety, professional ethics, and the balance between personal and professional responsibilities in medical practice. Hospital officials stressed the need for stricter supervision, ethics training, and preventive measures to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
