Kathmandu- Many people use lubricants during sex to reduce friction, pain, or dryness. A lubricant is any substance that helps make the process smoother—just like machines need oil or grease to run easily, the human body sometimes needs extra moisture for comfort. However, not everything that feels smooth or slippery is safe to use.

These days, many people use coconut oil, saliva, petroleum jelly, or body moisturizers as lubricants. But health experts strongly advise against using these items on your private parts.
Tamil Nadu-based reproductive specialist Dr. Mangala Lakshmi shared a viral post explaining that not every lubricant is safe—especially when it comes to reproductive health, fertility, and pregnancy. She said that while people think natural oils and household products are harmless, they can actually cause infections and serious irritation.

According to Dr. Nidhi Rajotia Goyal, Unit Head at Artemis Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, coconut oil should never be used as a lubricant. Though it is great for hair and skin, it can damage latex condoms, causing them to tear and leading to unwanted pregnancy. Coconut oil is also oil-based, which can disrupt the vagina’s natural pH balance, making it more alkaline and prone to fungal infections. Its sticky nature also makes cleaning difficult, which encourages bacterial growth.
Saliva, often used as a quick fix, is the most unsafe method, experts warn. It contains bacteria and viruses from the mouth, which can cause infections in the vagina or penis. If one partner has an STI like HIV, herpes, or HPV, it can easily be transmitted to the other. The bacteria in the mouth and vagina are entirely different, and saliva can disrupt the vaginal microbiome, leading to bacterial vaginosis, discharge, itching, and foul odor. Moreover, saliva dries up quickly, increasing the risk of friction, injury, and infection.

Petroleum jelly, commonly known as Vaseline, is also oil-based and weakens condoms, increasing the risk of breakage. It alters the vaginal pH and may cause bacterial vaginosis. It is also difficult to wash off completely, leaving behind residue that promotes bacterial growth.
Likewise, moisturizers and body lotions are made for external skin, not for intimate use. They often contain fragrances, alcohol, and chemicals that can irritate sensitive genital skin, leading to burning, itching, or infection. These substances can also weaken condoms, increasing the chances of leaks or tears.

Doctors recommend using only medical-grade lubricants, which are available in pharmacies, supermarkets, and online. Water-based lubricants are the safest—they’re condom-friendly, easy to clean, and maintain the vagina’s natural pH balance. Silicone-based lubricants last longer and are ideal for people who experience dryness more often. If you have sensitive skin, choose paraben-free and fragrance-free options.
If irritation or infection still occurs after use, consult a doctor immediately. Safe choices not only ensure comfort but also protect your reproductive health.
