Bhaktapur, Nepal – The Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in Bhaktapur has achieved a medical milestone by performing Nepal’s first third-kidney transplant on a single patient. Former Sudurpaschim Province Minister Laxman Kishore Chaudhary underwent the complex procedure and was discharged successfully.
Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha, Executive Director of the center, said the transplant was highly challenging due to medical risks and donor availability. Chaudhary’s first transplant was in India, while his second and third were performed in Nepal, with the third using a ‘pair exchange’ system involving non-relative donors.
This rare achievement highlights Nepal’s growing capability in advanced kidney transplants. Since its establishment, the center has conducted 1,502 kidney and 35 liver transplants, setting a benchmark for complex organ transplant procedures in the country.
