Kathmandu- A protest in Leh demanding full statehood for the Union Territory of Ladakh turned violent on Wednesday. Clashes between students and security forces left 4 dead and more than 72 injured.

Protesters pelted stones at police and set fire to BJP offices and CRPF vehicles. Authorities have banned all rallies and demonstrations in Leh.

The protesters were supporting social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike. Demonstrators called for a shutdown after their demands were not met. Wangchuk urged the youth to follow peaceful methods amid the violence and announced that he would end his hunger strike and the protest.
