Kathmandu- On Bhadra 23, the first day of the Gen Z protests in Kathmandu, 19 people tragically lost their lives. In response, then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli convened an emergency cabinet meeting at Baluwatar at 6 PM, which started nearly two hours late. Ministers had expected discussions on government missteps and how to move forward, but Oli’s briefing surprised many.
Oli suggested that the protests were not entirely spontaneous and may have been exploited by certain groups for personal gain. Citing the nature of injuries and deaths, he indicated the possible involvement of actors beyond the police. He also refused to attribute damage to government and private property solely to protesters, noting gaps in security arrangements and barricade management.

During the meeting, Minister Pradeep Paudel raised concerns about the social media ban. Oli argued that platforms could not reopen in Nepal without completing legal registration and tax obligations, saying, “Platforms operating without proper registration in our country have no legal authorization here.”
Oli mentioned forming an investigative committee, but the meeting did not finalize decisions on membership or structure. Ministers expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of consultation with security agencies and the Home Ministry before making decisions.
