Kathmandu — Facing a severe shortage of electronic passports, the Nepal government has approved the purchase of **700,000 new e-passports** from the same French supplier whose contract had previously been terminated.
The Cabinet meeting held on Friday at Singha Durbar authorized the Department of Passports to procure passports through a variation order until a new contract is finalized, according to government spokesperson and Information Minister Jagadish Kharel.
With thousands of citizens affected by the passport crisis, the government opted to move ahead with the controversial supplier to prevent further delays.
The Cabinet also approved Energy Secretary Chiranjeevi Chataut’s participation in the Nepal-Bangladesh Joint Working Group meeting in Dhaka on Mangsir 26–27.
Additionally, the government appointed Deepak Shrestha as Member-Secretary of the Lumbini Development Trust, approved military promotions, endorsed the organizational structure for Consumer and Juvenile Courts, and permitted Commission member Rina Rana to attend a women’s seminar in Lhasa, China.
