Sushila Karki, appointed as the new Prime Minister of the interim government, will take her oath of office tonight at 9 PM at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas. According to President’s Press Advisor Kiran Pokharel, President Ram Chandra Paudel will administer the oath.
Karki makes history as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister, following her earlier role as the country’s first female Chief Justice. She served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from June 2016 to May 2017, earning a reputation as an honest, impartial, and courageous jurist.
During her tenure, she delivered landmark verdicts, including the order allowing citizenship through a mother’s name, strict rulings on corruption cases involving powerful politicians, and directives in the case against lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam.
Although a motion of impeachment was once filed against her by political forces, it failed due to strong public support for judicial independence. Known for her fearless personality and simple lifestyle, Karki restored public trust in the judiciary. Now, she is set to lead the interim government, marking a new chapter in Nepal’s political history.
