Gujarat, India — All 16 ministers in Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s cabinet resigned on Thursday. The new cabinet is scheduled to take oath tomorrow at 11:30 AM in Gandhinagar.

The reshuffle is seen as preparation for the 2027 state assembly elections. Reports suggest that new faces may be included in the cabinet, and two deputy chief ministers could also be appointed.

Currently, the Gujarat cabinet had the Chief Minister, eight cabinet ministers, and eight ministers of state (MoS). After the reshuffle, the number of ministers may increase to 22–23. Legislators who recently joined BJP from Congress may also be included.

Political analysts say many current ministers have failed to meet the expectations of the BJP high command. In addition, BJP’s candidate lost the Visavadar Assembly by-election despite heavy campaigning by the Chief Minister and the state party president.

Frequent cabinet changes have been a feature of Gujarat politics. Sudden resignations under Anandiben Patel and Vijay Rupani, and now the reshuffle under Bhupendra Patel, reflect the anti-incumbency wave that analysts have observed.

Since Bhupendra Patel’s reappointment as Chief Minister in 2022, no cabinet changes have occurred for three years. With the municipal elections scheduled for January and the 2027 assembly elections approaching, the recent reshuffle is seen as a strategic preparation.
