Kathmandu – Medical education reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has urged the government to reverse past decisions influenced by vested interest groups. Dr. KC met with Prime Minister Sushila Karki at Singha Durbar today, demanding the cancellation of previous decisions made under the influence of private medical business interests, particularly regarding the increase in medical college seats.

He was accompanied by former Vice-Chairman of the Medical Education Commission Shree Krishna Giri and Professor Dr. Jagadish Prasad Agrawal. During the meeting, Dr. KC submitted a 10-point memorandum to the Prime Minister, calling for concrete actions to improve medical education, health governance, and social justice.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Karki, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Education Minister Mahabir Pun, Health Minister Dr. Sudha Gautam, and Medical Education Commission Vice-Chair Dr. Anjani Jha.

In his memorandum, Dr. KC demanded the restoration of the Medical Education Commission’s autonomy, correction of unauthorized seat allocations, and transparent appointments in the Geta Medical University. He also called for issuing an ordinance with clear criteria for appointing university officials, taking action against those involved in the disappearance and murder of Nirmala Kurmi, and proceeding with legal action against medical college operators involved in fake certificate cases.
He further urged the government to deliver justice to conflict victims, conclude the transitional justice process impartially, appoint qualified individuals to the Truth and Reconciliation and Disappearance Commissions, increase medical staffing in government hospitals, and take legal action against those responsible for ordering the shooting of youth protesters and arson attacks during recent movements.
Dr. KC stated, “For over two decades, we have been fighting for reforms in health, education, and good governance. The current government, formed on the foundation of the people’s movement, now has an opportunity to achieve lasting reforms that ensure justice and accountability.”
