Kathmandu — The CPN-UML has announced the central command of its newly formed “Youth Volunteer Force,” but the spotlight has shifted to a major controversy. At an event in Maitighar, coordinator Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal appointed Pushpa Raj Shrestha as the chief of the 11-member central command.

However, Shrestha is a highly controversial figure with over seven criminal charges in the police Criminal Record System. His cases include attempted murder, kidnapping, extortion, assault, and multiple public offense charges.

He was last arrested on September 11, 2018, for threatening a contractor, and his criminal background dates back nearly 20 years. From YCL to UML’s youth wing, Shrestha’s rise has been shadowed by allegations of violence and intimidation.

UML’s decision to appoint him as the head of its Youth Volunteer Force has ignited major political debate and raised questions about the party’s internal strategy and judgment.
