Kathmandu – China has announced $2 million in cash assistance to flood and landslide-affected Nepal. Alongside the financial aid, China has dispatched two cargo planes carrying relief materials and two specialized tunnel rescue and technical teams. According to Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, the support package includes cash, relief supplies, and technical manpower.
China had earlier pledged immediate financial assistance to Nepal. Following the devastating Bhotekoshi floods and landslides that caused heavy loss of lives and property, Nepal has prioritized technical support in rescue and relief operations. The government highlighted urgent needs such as rescuing people trapped inside tunnels, restoring transport and communication in areas where bridges collapsed, identifying deceased victims, conducting DNA testing, and preserving bodies for longer periods.
The Chinese tunnel rescue experts will coordinate with Nepal’s security and rescue agencies to assist in operations at high-risk structures and tunnels.
In addition to China, India, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the European Union, and other international organizations have announced support for Nepal. India has already sent cargo flights with relief materials, including portable generators, food supplies, and water purification equipment, as well as medical, paramedic, and technical teams for tunnel rescue.
Due to severe damage to roads, bridges, and infrastructure in northern districts, delivering relief materials has been challenging. To ease this, Nepal has requested both India and China to assist in building temporary Bailey bridges.
