Kathmandu – Scientists have warned of the risk that the rare but often fatal “brain-eating amoeba” could spread worldwide. Scientifically known as Naegleria fowleri, this parasite enters the body through the nose and attacks the nerves and brain.
Experts say rising water temperatures are allowing the microorganism to expand into new regions. In 2014, 11-year-old Jordan Smelski died in Costa Rica after being infected.
A few years ago, an outbreak in the southern Indian state of Kerala infected more than 200 people, reigniting fears about the deadly pathogen.
