Kathmandu — Defending champion Argentina has advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. In the last quarterfinal match held Sunday morning at Kansas City Stadium in the U.S., Argentina defeated Switzerland 3–1, marking its seventh entry into the World Cup semifinals.
Against Switzerland, Argentina proved fortunate. With the score tied 1–1, Switzerland was reduced to 10 men in the 71st minute after a red card. Despite this, Switzerland’s defense held firm and pushed the game into extra time. However, under pressure in the second half of extra time, Switzerland conceded another goal.
In an attempt to equalize, Switzerland opened up its defense and focused on Argentina’s post. Seizing the opportunity, Argentina carried the ball from midfield, and Martínez scored decisively. With that, Argentina secured a two-goal lead and sealed victory.
