Kathmandu — Former CPN-UML lawmaker Laxmi Mahato Koiri has been arrested by police on Thursday following a court order. The arrest came immediately after Home Minister Sudhan Gurung instructed police to detain the convict without delay, even before the written verdict was delivered.
Earlier, despite the district court’s ruling, Koiri had not been taken into custody. He, along with provincial assembly member Abhiram Sharma, was accused of murdering Armed Police Force Assistant Sub-Inspector Thaman Bik during the third Madhes movement in Jaleshwar, Mahottari.
On Wednesday, the High Court Janakpur sentenced both Koiri and Sharma to five years in prison. The verdict was delivered by Acting Chief Judge Tek Bahadur Kunwar and Judge Murari Babu Shrestha.
Koiri’s parliamentary position had already been suspended due to the murder charge, while Sharma’s provincial assembly seat also remains suspended.
