Artemis II Mission Successful: First Moon Orbit in 50 Years, a Historic Achievement for NASA

Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Under NASA’s historic Artemis II mission, four astronauts successfully completed a nearly 10-day orbit around the Moon and safely returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean aboard the Orion capsule. During re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, the capsule had to withstand temperatures exceeding 2,760 degrees Celsius and extreme speeds of around 40,000 to 42,000 kilometers per hour. However, due to advanced safety systems, the spacecraft landed safely.

This marks the first time in more than half a century that humans have traveled close to the Moon. The mission included Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, adding a new milestone in space exploration.

The mission also broke the distance record set by Apollo 13 in 1970, sending humans approximately 406,778 kilometers away from Earth and establishing a new record. In addition, it successfully carried out important technological tests for future space missions.

This achievement has further strengthened NASA’s long-term Artemis program, which aims to land humans on the Moon by 2028 and eventually expand human exploration to Mars.
