Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu – Having achieved major successes in space exploration, China is now preparing to establish its dominance in the depths of the ocean as well. Chinese engineers have designed the country’s first tourist submarine that will take visitors to the mysterious world 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet) below the ocean surface. This project is expected to redefine marine tourism.
Project Scope and Objectives
The ambitious project is being led by the China Ship Scientific Research Center, located in Wuxi city near Shanghai. According to the institute, the goal is to complete a prototype of this advanced submersible by the end of this year. If everything proceeds as planned, the submarine is expected to be operational commercially by 2030, offering deep-sea travel experiences to high-end and adventure-seeking tourists.
The most notable feature of this submarine is its panoramic viewport. This specially developed glass window will allow up to four passengers at a time to enjoy a 360-degree view of the ocean’s dark yet vibrant world, where even sunlight struggles to reach.
Technical Challenges and Safety Concerns
Reaching depths of 1,000 meters is considered extremely risky from a technical standpoint. At that depth, water pressure is nearly 100 times greater than at the surface. Building a structure strong enough to withstand such intense pressure is the biggest challenge for engineers. Although China has previously operated tourist submarines reaching depths of around 20 meters, traveling to 1,000 meters represents a significant leap.
In particular, after the 2023 Titan submersible accident in the Atlantic Ocean—where five people died while attempting to view the Titanic wreck—serious concerns have been raised worldwide about the safety of deep-sea tourism. Chinese experts say they are learning from that incident and are giving special attention to safety mechanisms and construction materials. According to them, this submarine will not only be for entertainment but will also represent a scientific achievement with high safety standards.
Economic and Tourism Significance
This project is expected to elevate China to new heights in the global market for luxury and adventure tourism. Although the यात्रा cost is likely to be very high, experts believe it will become a dream experience for a limited number of elite tourists.
