Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu – Regarding the recent political developments, leaders of major opposition parties have expressed serious dissatisfaction with the government. They have alleged that the government is engaging in vindictive politics and undermining democratic values.

Mahesh Basnet, Secretary of the Nepal Communist Party (UML), reacted through social media platform Facebook, stating that the absence of political prisoners is an important indicator of democracy. He noted that Nepal had been exemplary in this regard in the past, but recent developments are a cause for concern.

Basnet criticized the government for assigning important responsibilities to inexperienced and controversial individuals and voiced objections to the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. He warned that such actions could escalate conflicts and reflect revenge and bias.

He also questioned the role of security personnel, expressing concern that a large number of police, who are unable to protect government property, were deployed to arrest leaders who fought for democracy. He called on people to participate in protests organized by the party to safeguard democratic values.

Meanwhile, Kamal Thapa, leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, also criticized the government, stating that a government formed with the goal of good governance and economic prosperity has now taken the path of prohibition, revenge, and bias.

Thapa emphasized that conflict and clashes should not be anyone’s priority at this time, and that adherence to the rule of law, mutual reconciliation, and national unity are the foundations of good governance and prosperity. Kamal Thapa had worked alongside KP Sharma Oli as Foreign Minister when Oli was Prime Minister. In Thapa’s view, KP Sharma Oli is perceived as a nationalist leader.

The reactions of both leaders reflect growing dissatisfaction within the opposition parties and indicate that political activities and movements are likely to intensify in the coming days.
