A film more expensive than a giant ship carrying history: a truth and fact

Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. The fact that the budget spent on making the Titanic film is higher than the cost of constructing the world-famous ship RMS Titanic has surprised many people. The comparison between the Titanic ship, which is associated with the tragic but famous event known as the sinking of the Titanic in world history, and the film based on it is still a topic of interesting debate today. On one hand, the ship is considered a remarkable example of engineering, and on the other hand, the film is an excellent presentation of modern technology and storytelling—both have made history in their respective fields. According to history, the Titanic ship, constructed by the White Star Line company between 1910 and 1912, cost about 7.5 million US dollars to build. At that time, this was considered a very large amount. If this is converted to today’s value according to inflation, its cost reaches approximately 120 to 150 million US dollars. However, this amount still seems lower when compared to modern film production.

In 1997, the film “Titanic” directed by James Cameron cost about 200 million US dollars to produce. This made the film one of the most expensive films of its time. Even after adjusting for inflation, the film’s budget appears to be about 50 to 80 million US dollars higher than the cost of the real ship, which presents a surprising fact for many people.

There were many reasons behind such a large budget in the making of the film. Cameron built a massive replica of about 90 percent of the ship’s size to make the film realistic. Similarly, advanced visual effects were used to make the sinking scenes look real, which was considered very expensive technology in the 1990s. In addition, a giant water tank capable of holding 17 million gallons of water was constructed for shooting, which further increased the cost. Long shooting time, technical complexity, and repeated delays also played an important role in increasing the budget. However, such a large investment did not go to waste. After its release, Titanic earned about 2.2 billion US dollars worldwide and achieved historic success by winning 11 Academy Awards. It set a new standard in the entertainment industry.

According to experts, with the development of technology over time, increasing audience expectations, and higher levels of presentation, the cost of film production has also increased rapidly. Titanic is a perfect example of this trend, where a film based on a historical event even surpassed the cost of constructing the actual ship. This clearly shows how time, technology, and the value structure of the entertainment industry have changed the nature of costs. The success of this movie is also due to the investment made in it and the realistic portrayal of every detail. Even today, the Titanic movie is considered equally successful, and people of all age groups watch this film.
