Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Japan women’s national football team has once again asserted its dominance in Asian football by winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup title. In the final held in Sydney on Saturday, Japan edged past hosts Australia women’s national football team with a narrow 1–0 victory to claim their third championship.The decisive moment came in the 17th minute when 21-year-old forward Maika Hamano struck a long-range effort from outside the penalty area, which turned out to be the match-winning goal.
Interestingly, this marks the third time Japan has defeated Australia 1–0 in an Asian Cup final, having previously done so in 2014 and 2018. Japan showcased attacking brilliance throughout the tournament, scoring a total of 29 goals. Riko Ueki finished as the top scorer with six goals, earning the Golden Boot, while Ayaka Yamashita was named the best goalkeeper. With this result, Japan, Australia, China, South Korea, the Philippines, and North Korea have secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Additionally, all eight quarterfinalist teams have earned spots in the qualification rounds for the 2028 Olympic Games.
