Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu — Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti), Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, has launched a scathing attack on the leadership of Nepal’s mainstream communist parties. In a detailed social media statement on Saturday, Bhattarai accused top leaders of “ironic arrogance” for threatening to punish cadres instead of conducting an honest post-mortem of their historic electoral defeat.
The Internal Dialectics of Failure
Invoking the core tenets of Materialist Dialectics—a philosophy synthesized from Marx to Mao—Bhattarai argued that the primary cause of any entity’s decline is internal, with external factors playing only a secondary role. He questioned whether the leadership’s refusal to take responsibility was a betrayal of the very ideology they claim to follow.
When you point an index finger at others, the remaining three fingers are always pointing back at you,” Bhattarai wrote, reminding leaders that the blame for the mass exodus of voters cannot be shifted onto “foreign conspiracies” or “disloyal” grassroots workers.
A Decade of Decline
The statistics highlighted by Dr. Bhattarai paint a grim picture of the communist trajectory in Nepal. He noted that the combined “leftist” mandate, which stood at a near two-thirds majority in 2017, has plummeted to a mere 22% in the 2082 (2026) elections. He challenged the “main leadership” to explain how such a massive popular base evaporated in just a decade if not for their own policy failures and internal corruption.
The “West Bengal” Warning
In a stern warning, Bhattarai drew parallels between Nepal and the collapses of communist regimes in Russia, Eastern Europe, and West Bengal. He argued that without a radical transformation—encompassing new ideology, policies, programs, and a fresh generation of leadership—the movement in Nepal is destined for the same irrelevance.
He concluded by urging a total “re-imagining” of the socialist movement to align with the changed national and global context, rather than clinging to “outdated organizational structures” that have clearly been rejected by the youth and the working class.
