Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Nepal is observing the 16th death anniversary of former Prime Minister and veteran leader Girija Prasad Koirala today by organizing various commemorative events. Koirala, a four-time Prime Minister and the former President of the Nepali Congress, passed away on March 21, 2010 (Chaitra 7, 2066 BS). He is widely remembered as the architect of Nepal’s historic peace process and the transition from monarchy to a federal democratic republic.
Koirala played a monumental role in bringing the then-rebel Maoists into mainstream politics, ending a decade-long armed conflict. He successfully led the 2006 People’s Movement (Jana Andolan II) by uniting major political parties against the direct rule of King Gyanendra. His leadership was instrumental in the restoration of the House of Representatives and the eventual abolition of the 240-year-old monarchy, during which he also served as the acting Head of State.
To honor his legacy of “Consensus, Cooperation, and Unity,” the Nepali Congress and its sister organizations are conducting talk programs, candle-lighting ceremonies, and various social service activities across the country. Leaders and well-wishers today paid rich tributes to the statesman, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to democracy and national stability.
