Kathmandu – Due to the influence of powerful western winds, rainfall has been occurring even in the Kathmandu Valley.
Its impact has brought rain with storms to districts in western Nepal along with Gandaki and Bagmati provinces, and the system is gradually moving eastward.
Because of this, darkness fell even during the daytime. In districts including Dang, Rupandehi, and the Kathmandu Valley, drivers had to turn on their headlights in broad daylight. Daily life of those who had to be outdoors was also affected.
This system entered Nepal from the far west, having traveled from the Mediterranean through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India’s Uttarakhand. Reports suggest Pakistan suffered the most damage along its path.
Currently, Sudurpaschim, Karnali, Lumbini, Gandaki, Bagmati, and Madhesh provinces are experiencing rain accompanied by storms, thunder, and lightning. Some areas of Kathmandu even saw hail.
In Koshi Province, the impact is expected to be stronger tomorrow, Saturday, compared to today. Therefore, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has urged special caution.
According to meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, this situation is likely to persist until tomorrow. “From Sunday onward, the weather will gradually improve,” he said.
Weather researcher Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti explained that this is the pre-monsoon period, before the monsoon officially begins. Since March 1, this is the third wave of pre-monsoon activity, and it is stronger than the previous two systems.
He noted that rainfall will continue until Saturday night. “Even if it lessens at times, the rain is not expected to stop immediately,” he said.
Another system developing in Bihar, India, is moving northward, which will also bring rain to Madhesh and Koshi provinces.
“Looking at the current situation, improvement in weather can be expected from Saturday night or Sunday morning,” he added.
