The Unbelievable Cricket Tale from Australia: 286 Runs from One Ball

Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Cricket is a game filled with incredible records, unforgettable moments, and stories that sound almost too unbelievable to be true. As cricket fans, we are used to seeing 1 run, 2 runs, a boundary 4, or a massive 6 from a single delivery. In rare cases, due to overthrows or no-balls, the total may reach 7 or 8 runs.

But imagine scoring 286 runs from just one ball.

It sounds impossible in modern cricket. Yet, according to cricket folklore, this extraordinary incident reportedly took place on 15 January 1896 in Australia, during a match between two recognized teams of that time.

 The Match in Australia

The story goes that the match was played on a ground where the boundary was not as clearly marked as today. In those days, cricket fields were often surrounded by natural landscapes — including trees close to the playing area.

During the match, a batsman struck the ball with tremendous force. Instead of landing safely on the ground, the ball flew high and became stuck in a large tree near the boundary.

At first, the fielding team assumed it would quickly fall. But it remained lodged in the branches.

Chaos on the Field

The fielders tried everything to retrieve the ball. They threw sticks, attempted to shake the tree, and even searched for ways to knock the ball down. However, while they were struggling to bring the ball back into play, the batsmen realized something important:

The ball had not yet been declared “dead” by the umpire.

Under the laws of cricket at that time, as long as the ball remained in play, the batsmen could continue running between the wickets.

So they did.

They ran once.

Then twice.

Then again and again — continuously.

By the time the ball was finally dislodged from the tree and returned to the field, the batsmen had astonishingly completed 286 runs.

A Record That Sounds Like a Legend

This incident is often described as one of the most bizarre and extraordinary tales in cricket history. Whether fully documented or partly legendary, it reflects how different cricket was in the 19th century.

Modern cricket rules would never allow such a situation:

  • Boundaries are clearly defined.
  • Umpires quickly declare the ball dead.
  • Grounds are free from obstacles like trees near the pitch.
  • Technology assists in decision-making.

Today, the highest runs from a single delivery — even with overthrows — are nowhere near 286.

Fact or Folklore?

Some historians believe the story may have been exaggerated over time, while others treat it as a rare but genuine historical event from early Australian cricket. Records from the 1800s were not always carefully preserved, making it difficult to verify every detail.

Still, the story remains a fascinating part of cricket’s rich folklore.

The Beauty of Cricket History

Cricket has evolved tremendously since 1896. From natural grounds in Australia to modern stadiums with floodlights and technology, the game has become more structured and professional.

Yet stories like the “286 runs from one ball” remind us that cricket is not just about statistics — it is about remarkable, unforgettable moments.

And while today a six is considered huge, somewhere in cricket history, there lives a tale of 286 runs from a single ball — a story that continues to amaze cricket lovers around the world.
